Pepper is a dog that will try to lick away all your wounds. ALL of them. He has gotten me out and walking after a lifelong bout with depression. He tries every day to cure Gordy's eczema with kisses. If he could, he would cure cancer. He hasn't been able to yet, but he has been able to convince my mother-in-law, a cancer survivor, to get out and enjoy the sunshine. She's starting to gain back her confidence, and I have no doubt that Pepper's newest achievement (walking with a dog he used to try to kill) will inspire her further.
As a pit bull who was fought before we took him in, he proves that it is possible to overcome adversity. He came to us severely emaciated with open wounds and behavior problems. He sent Tiger, my Rottweiler-Chow mix, to the veterinary hospital for stitches within the first few days of meeting him. Now, after a lot of work, he can run alongside a bike and walk alongside Tiger. He brings smiles to the faces of anyone who comes into contact with him. While he still has difficulty with confined spaces and advancing dogs, he is slowly but surely learning to overcome what was beaten into him early in life. He is a survivor too.
I placed the "tattoo" where I did because, while we haven't been able to find a cure for cancer, his kisses can help relieve some of the pain. Here's hoping the day when we can say "Cancer is only a memory" is not too far off.
